Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met in Hà Nội on September 5, marking Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural visit to Vietnam as president. The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral relations, with both leaders committing to broaden cooperation across various sectors. Prime Minister Hưng expressed Vietnam’s ongoing support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic advancement.
During the meeting, President Min Aung Hlaing lauded Vietnam for its socio-economic accomplishments and rising influence regionally and internationally. He showed interest in learning from Vietnam’s developmental strategies and emphasized Myanmar’s dedication to preserving its longstanding friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. The two leaders acknowledged recent positive developments in their bilateral relations and agreed on the necessity of boosting high-level exchanges and political trust. They also underscored the importance of reinstating key cooperation mechanisms in trade, security, and defense.
A significant component of their discussion was defense and security cooperation, which is anticipated to become a cornerstone of their relationship. Both countries plan to intensify joint efforts in combating cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Furthermore, they aim to expand military training, young officer exchanges, and tackle non-traditional security challenges collaboratively.
Economic collaboration also featured prominently in the talks. The leaders agreed to explore avenues for enhancing trade and updating existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese investors, particularly in the sectors of telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure. Additionally, the discussions covered improving infrastructure and air connectivity, reinstating direct flights, and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism.
On regional issues, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working with ASEAN members to foster dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both sides advocated for resolving disputes peacefully in line with international law. Prime Minister Hưng also invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026, while the Myanmar president extended an invitation to Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time.
