Thailand has raised concerns with China over the recent delivery of tanks to Cambodia, cautioning that this development could destabilize the already fragile ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. The warning follows last year’s deadly border clashes between the two nations. During a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul highlighted these concerns, as confirmed by Thailand’s foreign ministry. Officials have noted that the timing and manner of the military shipment could further strain the tenuous relations between Thailand and Cambodia, which have been fraught despite several ceasefire agreements.
According to Thai authorities, Cambodia received 39 Chinese-made T-59D battle tanks as part of an ongoing military cooperation agreement. However, they clarified that there is no evidence suggesting the tanks have been positioned near the border. The relationship between the two Southeast Asian neighbors remains tense following violent altercations along their shared border last year. The continued disputes over land and maritime boundaries, which have roots in colonial-era treaties and maps, complicate diplomatic negotiations.
China, on its part, has maintained that its defense collaboration with both Thailand and Cambodia is standard practice and not aimed at any third party. Earlier in the year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette. Despite the tensions, Thai officials have expressed appreciation for China’s neutral stance and its efforts to facilitate the reduction of tensions, underscoring the necessity for Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their disputes through direct dialogue.
In an effort to address not only the border issues but also broader concerns, Thailand and China have agreed to establish a new dialogue mechanism. This initiative will involve their foreign and defense ministers, with the inaugural round of talks expected to concentrate on combating cross-border scam operations. Such diplomatic engagements suggest a hopeful direction towards maintaining stability and fostering cooperation in the region.
