In a call for enhanced economic collaboration, Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested the establishment of a new insurance mechanism and a joint grain market for BRICS nations. Addressing the BRICS outreach session, Putin emphasized the need for member states to bolster their independent financial systems and create robust channels for capital, labor, and technology, aiming to mitigate susceptibility to external pressures.

“We have independent routes for moving capital, labour and technologies,” Putin remarked, proposing that Russia’s ideas regarding an insurance framework and grain market could be adopted by other BRICS countries. This recommendation comes amid the backdrop of Western sanctions and insurance service restrictions that are impacting Russian energy exports. The European Union, G7, and the UK have set constraints on Western companies insuring vessels transporting Russian oil, unless those shipments adhere to specific price cap conditions.

Putin commended the efforts of the New Development Bank, which was founded by BRICS members, underscoring the significance of expanding financial ties among emerging economies. He advocated for a comprehensive strategy to tackle global challenges, urging BRICS countries to address both the immediate impacts and root causes of international crises. Additionally, Putin appealed to nations in the Global South to unite in reforming global governance and confronting both traditional and new security threats.

The Russian leader pointed out that the growing interest in BRICS is indicative of a rising international inclination towards the group’s mission of fostering an independent stance on global economic and political matters. According to Putin, this increased participation highlights the broader appeal of BRICS as a platform for addressing shared global issues through cooperative means.
