Iran has leveled accusations against Qatar, claiming the Gulf country is hindering an investigation into the disappearance of three Iranian pilots amidst a recent conflict. Iran insists that its Air Force team has been stalled for months, awaiting permission to enter Qatar and probe the situation. As tensions simmer, Iran’s armed forces official, Mohammad Bagherzadeh, has called on Doha to grant access for the investigative team and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene in the matter.
Contradicting Iran’s allegations, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed al-Ansari, firmly refuted claims of detaining any Iranian pilots. Al-Ansari explained that Qatar took defensive measures after Iranian pilots allegedly breached its airspace and failed to respond to communication attempts. Qatar has stated that its search and rescue teams initiated operations to locate the pilots and their remains, and confirmed coordination with Iran for the transfer of remains of one pilot, Majid Kazemi, who Iran claims was killed during an incident involving the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
The diplomatic rift intensifies as Qatar accuses Iran of not responding to an invitation extended in April, which sought to facilitate an Iranian team’s visit to receive detailed information regarding the search and rescue mission. Despite Qatar’s outreach, Iran has yet to engage with the invitation, further complicating the situation.
This dispute emerges against the backdrop of ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States, and other regional powers following the outbreak of conflict earlier this year.
