UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches. In his statement, Guterres emphasized the need for a lasting political solution, increased humanitarian aid, and adherence to international law.

Guterres condemned the Hamas assault that resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and the abduction of 251 hostages. Simultaneously, he drew attention to the significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction that Palestinians in Gaza have endured. Health authorities in Gaza report that over 74,200 Palestinians have died as a result of Israel’s ongoing military operations in the region.

While a ceasefire declared in October 2025 brought some relief, Guterres noted that it has not yet ensured lasting security, adequate humanitarian aid, or a viable path to recovery and peace. He urged for an end to the suffering experienced by both Israelis and Palestinians and called for renewed efforts to establish conditions where both parties can live securely, with dignity, and with their rights protected.
