United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has lauded Indonesia for its substantial contributions to global peace and multilateral cooperation. During his address at the Foreign Policy Circle Talks in Jakarta, Guterres commended Indonesia’s active diplomatic role in the Asia-Pacific region and the Global South. He highlighted the nation’s historical commitment to international cooperation, referencing the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, which emphasized non-alignment and national self-determination.
Guterres pointed to Indonesia’s participation in various international organizations, including the United Nations, ASEAN, the G20, and BRICS, as evidence of its commitment to multilateralism. He emphasized the collaboration between ASEAN and the UN in areas such as conflict prevention, sustainable development, and human rights.
Indonesia’s involvement in UN peacekeeping operations was a focal point of Guterres’ praise. Nearly 2,000 Indonesian military and police personnel are currently deployed across seven UN peacekeeping missions worldwide. During a visit to a peacekeeping training center in Sentul, West Java, Guterres observed Indonesian personnel preparing for deployment to the UN mission in the Central African Republic. He commended the country’s training programs and ongoing dedication to international peacekeeping efforts.
Guterres underscored that Indonesia’s diplomatic initiatives and peacekeeping contributions have enhanced its role in fostering dialogue and cooperation across regions. The Secretary-General’s remarks highlight Indonesia’s significant impact on global peace efforts and its support for a multilateral approach to addressing international challenges.
