Mark Rydell, the acclaimed director best known for the film “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. He died of natural causes at a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s career in Hollywood was marked by his ability to bring together some of the industry’s biggest stars, exemplified by his work on the 1981 classic “On Golden Pond,” which starred Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda.
“On Golden Pond” was a significant milestone in Rydell’s career, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Although he did not win, losing to Warren Beatty for “Reds,” the film was a remarkable success both critically and commercially, grossing over $119 million globally. It was also Henry Fonda’s final film role, for which he won his only Oscar, alongside Hepburn who also received an acting award for her performance.
