Malaysia is poised to send a team of DNA experts to Nepal to assist in identifying victims following catastrophic floods and landslides, pending approval from Nepalese authorities. According to Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Malaysia has sought permission for these specialists to begin DNA identification once search and rescue efforts in the affected areas are completed. This initiative aims to match DNA samples from recovered bodies with those from families of missing Malaysian nationals.
As part of their preparations, Malaysian authorities have already gathered DNA samples from relatives of 55 Malaysians who have not been accounted for since the natural disasters struck. Due to the urgency and limited facilities, some of the bodies recovered have been buried swiftly, underscoring the critical need for DNA testing to confirm identities.
The Malaysian team, consisting of 11 personnel, is equipped with 12.4 tonnes of rescue gear, which includes detection devices, communication systems, high-capacity drones, and specialized tools for tunnel rescue operations. Additionally, they have brought along a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a 10-tonne truck to aid in their mission.
Malaysia’s comprehensive approach combines search, rescue, and DNA identification efforts, with the ultimate goal of locating those still missing and providing confirmation to families about their loved ones’ fate. This collaborative endeavor underscores the importance of international cooperation in the aftermath of natural disasters, offering hope to those awaiting news of family members.
