Indonesia is leveraging its vast mineral resources, particularly nickel and copper, to bolster its position in the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry. Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria emphasized that processing these critical minerals should enhance the country’s digital infrastructure, making it more resilient, efficient, and sustainable while adding greater domestic value.
Nickel and copper are integral to AI infrastructure, supporting components such as batteries, electrical equipment, transmission networks, and systems used in data centers. With Indonesia contributing approximately 62% of the world’s mined nickel production, the country holds a pivotal role in the global mineral supply chain. Patria underscored the importance of responsible processing practices that include environmental safeguards, traceability, and sustainable labor practices to maintain this advantage.
Beyond mineral resources, Patria noted that AI development also requires reliable electricity, robust fiber-optic networks, advanced data centers, effective cooling systems, a skilled workforce, and efficient governance. These elements are crucial to establishing a strong digital foundation.
As Indonesia seeks to establish itself as a regional AI hub, it aims to harness its mineral wealth, burgeoning digital economy, and expanding technology workforce. The country envisions creating higher-value jobs and enhancing its domestic technological capabilities through these efforts.
