IMF Boosts 2026 Growth Forecasts for Southeast Asia Amid AI Investment Surge

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has boosted its economic growth forecasts for Southeast Asian economies in 2026, attributing the increase to heightened investment in artificial intelligence and technological infrastructure. In its latest World Economic Outlook report, the IMF predicts that the collective growth for Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand will reach 4.4% in 2026, an upward revision from its previous projection of 4.1%.

This optimistic outlook contrasts with the IMF’s global economic growth forecast, which has been slightly adjusted to 3.1% for 2026 from an earlier estimate of 3%. The projection for 2027 remains steady at 3.4%, following a growth rate of 3.5% in 2025. The IMF attributes the Southeast Asian growth to significant investments in data centers and infrastructure pivotal to the expanding global AI sector, which is expected to enhance demand and exports in countries linked to high-tech supply chains.

In contrast, China’s growth expectations have been slightly lowered to 4.5% for 2026, down from the previous estimate, and below the 5% growth recorded in 2025. This adjustment reflects challenges such as higher global oil prices and ongoing economic uncertainties impacting its outlook.

While the IMF acknowledges the positive impact of technology-related investments on global economic growth, it also cautions that economies heavily reliant on energy imports and with limited exposure to the technology sector may face increased costs, reduced purchasing power, and tighter governmental budgets.

Additionally, the report projects global headline inflation to rise to 4.7% in 2026 from 4.1% in 2025, driven largely by elevated energy and food prices. Inflation is anticipated to ease to 4.1% in 2027. The IMF warns that persistent geopolitical conflicts, trade tensions, and financial market volatility pose risks to the global economic landscape.

The IMF advises that government interventions to mitigate the impact of higher energy and food prices should be strategically temporary and targeted to prevent undermining public finances. The report underscores the importance of these measures in maintaining economic stability amid various global challenges.
