Thailand Cautions Cambodia to Keep Border Dispute Local, Not Global

by admin477351

Thailand has issued a warning that ongoing border disputes with Cambodia, if continuously brought to international attention, could harm efforts to rebuild diplomatic relations. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow expressed concerns that accusations presented against Thailand at global forums might impede the trust-building initiatives between the two nations.

The warning from Thailand came after remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. Chhea highlighted the humanitarian repercussions of past border conflicts between the countries, pointing out issues such as civilian displacement, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and damage to the Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand criticized Cambodia’s statements as being biased and not aligned with a joint agreement signed in late 2025. This agreement was intended to foster reconciliation and restore confidence between the countries. The Thai government emphasized that Cambodia’s narrative did not reflect the spirit of this accord, which aims to promote peaceful relations.

In response, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border issues through peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and respect for existing ceasefire agreements. Pen Bona emphasized that Cambodia remains dedicated to these principles in addressing the longstanding border tensions.

The border dispute, particularly concerning areas near the Preah Vihear Temple, has long been a source of strain in Thai-Cambodian relations. These tensions have occasionally flared up, affecting the bilateral ties between the neighboring countries. Both nations have been urged to focus on diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
