Inspect Fuselages for Cracks, Boeing 737 Max Operators Instructed Urgently

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max airplanes to check for potential cracks in a crucial fuselage component. This directive impacts approximately 471 aircraft, with inspections slated to commence in September. The component under scrutiny is the “bear strap,” a series of structural sheets that provide support around the plane’s exit doors. The decision follows similar findings of cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which have already undergone inspections.

While no cracks have been detected in the 737 Max fleet to date, the FAA emphasized that the design and manufacturing process of the Max closely resembles that of the Next Generation series. This similarity raises concerns that the same structural issues could emerge. The agency cautioned that any undetected cracks could compromise the aircraft’s structural integrity, posing potential safety risks.

Boeing has acknowledged the issue and has been collaborating with airlines since its identification in 2019. The company supports the FAA’s call for compulsory inspections, stating that these checks aim to discover and address any structural vulnerabilities before they escalate to critical levels. This proactive approach is intended to prevent any compromise to the aircraft’s safety.

The initiation of these inspections adds another layer of scrutiny to the Boeing 737 Max, which has been under intense examination following two tragic crashes in 2018 and 2019. These incidents had previously led to the global grounding of the aircraft type. Concerns over the Max have persisted regarding its manufacturing and engineering quality, prompting increased vigilance from both regulators and the aviation industry.
