In a significant move towards advancing global collaboration in artificial intelligence, Indonesia has become a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This decision was underscored during discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister, Airlangga Hartarto, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The talks highlighted Indonesia’s dedication to establishing a governance framework for AI that prioritizes equitable development, human-centric innovation, national sovereignty, inclusive multilateralism, and adherence to United Nations principles.
Indonesia is keen on playing a pivotal role within WAICO, as evidenced by its proposal to secure a senior position in the organization’s secretariat. The country is also seeking to deepen its cooperation with China in areas of artificial intelligence, trade, and investment. Minister Airlangga emphasized the need for enhanced market access for Indonesian exports, while also encouraging Chinese companies to invest in advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
Further strengthening bilateral relations, Indonesia has thrown its support behind China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. To build on this, Airlangga proposed organizing a bilateral business summit, which would coincide with a planned meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping. This summit aims to further economic cooperation between the two nations.
These developments mark a strategic step forward for Indonesia as it seeks to bolster its position in the global AI landscape and enhance economic ties with China. Through WAICO membership and proposed initiatives, Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of AI governance and international economic partnerships.
