As Malaysia prepares for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, the nation has set its sights on achieving a total of 33 medals, consisting of six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze. The event, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, will see Malaysia’s athletes striving for success in various disciplines. Chef de Mission Mohd Sumali Reduan expressed confidence in this target, deeming it realistic based on the athletes’ current form, their recent performances, and the competitive landscape across Asia.
The Malaysian team has pinpointed 13 sports with promising medal prospects. These sports include track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, squash, sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. In total, the contingent will comprise 352 athletes accompanied by 185 officials. They will be competing in 30 out of the 43 sports available at the Games, participating in 156 of the 469 events.
A notable highlight for the Malaysian team is the selection of wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min as the flag-bearer for the Asian Games. Meanwhile, track cycling star Azizulhasni Awang is anticipated to play a significant role in boosting Malaysia’s medal tally with his performance.
In addition to the Asian Games, Malaysia’s delegation for the Asian Para Games, which is set to take place from October 18 to 24, has also set ambitious targets. They aim to secure six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals in this prestigious event.
